Sustainable Living
A Letter from Matt Malten

A sustainable practice “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” – World Commission on Environment and Development (Brundtland Commission), Our Common Future, 1987.

Washington U. is developing a university-wide sustainability initiative through its academics, research, operations, and community engagement and outreach. A key component this initiative is to engage each member of the Washington U. community to “do their part” to make our campus more sustainable.

If you want the world to move toward sustainability by balancing economic, environmental, and social performance, individual action is the first step. This handbook outlines some, but certainly not all, strategies to make your years at Washington U. more sustainable.
